Independent research has found that the media are influenced by wealthy business. For example large conglomerates own some of the media sources, in this way they can control the media that interests the conglomerate or the owners views.The news media is influenced by those who have the money, and those who have the money tend to be liberal. There are many institutional pressures, such as who owns the media, the role of the advertisers and the kinds of sources they use.
I think you misspoke in your first sentence, however it looks like you understand the points that Chomsky and Herman made.
