Deconstructing my ad.

Making Observations: The purpose of this advertisement is to sell a really fast, flying wheelchair, with the ability to shoot down invading aircraft or birds. There are no people used in this ad so it has a more humorous and less human effect. The lighting and background are artificial and bright. It mainly represents a humorous side of shopping for a wheelchair. The demographic group who would enjoy this would probably be male, or those is wheelchairs, disgusted by the obstacles of getting around in an ordinary chair. There is some bold black text and a question to the reader, "why would you not buy it?" Making it sound like more of a necessity then a want.

Purpose of Ad: The purpose is to sell an unrealistic, upgraded wheelchair using humor. The target in this ad is handicapped individuals or those who work with these individuals. I think it is an appealing ad, as it uses a lot of humor rather than the emotion that is usually associated with products for disabled.
The humor does work in this ad.

Assumptions: This ad does not make any assumptions about race. It does make the assumption that men would be more comfortable in a wheelchair if it has some masculine features, like a machine gun or rocket propelled. I think it also makes the assumption that the wheelchair being produced today, are inadequate for getting around. This ad does challenge the stereotype that disabled people are all sweet and helpless and never get irritated or think of running someone down. I happen to know that people in wheelchairs think of this quite often.

Consider the Consequences: I can see only a couple of consequences for this ad, primarily that it might make people angry. Because it is not real, there is no chance that we are going to be over run by people in armed wheelchairs, flying around at will. The underlying message to effect social change is that people in wheelchairs, are just like anyone else and want faster, upgraded features and also use humor in their personality. This ad is not really socially responsible because it could give somebody the idea to mount a machine gun on their wheelchair. From a citizen's view, this may make things easier for a person in a wheelchair, but the gun is pretty irresponsbile. From a consumer/user point of view, a chair that went anywhere would be helpful, but the machine gun would be humorous to those in chairs.

  1. Al,
This is a great example of how to do this exercise! I really like how you leveraged your expertise with Photoshop and especially your deconstruction, and the observation, "The underlying message to effect social change is that people in wheelchairs, are just like anyone else and want faster, upgraded features..." Keep up the good work!
