1. Used Cars: 5 to Avoid (and 5 Better Alternatives)

By
Jerry Edgerton
(MoneyWatch)  Even though auto manufacturers have greatly boosted quality and reliability, buying a used car can still be a process fraught with anxiety. In addition to worrying about the honesty of the seller, you also want to be sure to avoid vehicles with poor reliability records.

To help with that, MoneyWatch looked at owner surveys to see which cars look like trouble, focusing on five separate categories. We focused on 2008 models -- the year ranked in the latest dependability study from J.D. Power and Associates. Buying a 3-year-old used car also lets you shop after the biggest new-car depreciation already has taken place: Because used car prices have risen so sharply this year, 1- and 2-year-old used models can make worse financial sense than buying new.

To make our list of used-car rejects, a model had to get the minimum two out of five in the J.D. Power "circle ratings" for dependability. It also had to be ranked below average as a used car by Consumer Reports in its annual April car issue and online car rankings.

Here are our recommendations for used cars to avoid -- plus some better ideas in the same categories. Volkswagen and Chrysler Group, which also makes Dodge and Jeep, both have two entries on our avoidance list.

(AP)  COVE CITY, N.C. - A 9-year-old North Carolina girl pinned in a wrecked car for almost two days ate Pop-Tarts and Gatorade to help her survive the single-car crash that killed her father, police and relatives said on Monday.
Jordan Landon of Cove City was airlifted to a hospital Sunday night after rescue teams cut her out of the 1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that had been upside down in a culvert since Friday night, the North Carolina Highway Patrol said. Killed was 39-year-old Douglas Landon, police said.
Sgt. David Clifton called the girl "heroic" and that she was able to stay calm despite being trapped in the dark and cold. He says the girl was talkative and is expected to fully recover.
Clifton said a person walking by saw the car off the state highway and called 911 late Sunday afternoon, more than 40 hours after the pair was believed to have crashed on their way to a store. Temperatures at night had dropped into the 30s in the area in eastern North Carolina.

Police said the speedometer on the car was stuck at more than 100 mph. Douglas Landon's employer and friend, Butch Morse, said he found hard to believe Landon was going that fast.
"He wasn't speeding, there is no way in God's green earth he was speeding," Morse told WCTI-TV.
In his final moments, a family friend said Landon was trying to protect his daughter.
"He was curled up in a ball with his arm right across his chest and his other arm pushed out across Jordan. He was trying to hold her and trying to keep her protected, he was a good father," Kevin Brinson told the TV station.
Her mother, Claudette Leohmann, said Jordan was recovering but was very upset about the loss of her father, who was Leohmann's longtime boyfriend.
A call by The Associated Press to the local highway patrol station went unanswered Monday night

(CBS) - Like so many people, I am a huge fan of Radiohead's now-legendary album "OK Computer". To this day I still find myself randomly singing or humming songs from the album for absolutely no reason at all. Which is part of the reason why I feel compelled to post this amazing bass guitar cover of the song "Karma Police". Take a listen.
Wow, right? The phenomenal cover was posted by YouTube user resonantmind and performed by Tom Morgan, who has definitely just earned himself a triple-rainbow salute from all of us here at The Feed for hands-down, without-a-doubt the best bass cover I've ever heard of "Karma Police" (and quite possibly best bass guitar cover I've ever heard, for that matter).  If you'd like to know more about Tom Morgan, you can check out his Facebook page by clicking here.
